Cross tuning a fiddle means changing the relationship of the strings, deviating from the standard GDAE, to enhance the resonance of the instrument. If you’ve never tried this before – the sound it creates is magic! We’ll learn a great tune from the playing of Cedric Watson called La Vieille Chanson de Mardi Gras – crooked and cross-tuned. Our fiddles will be in GDGD tuning, and when I listen to this particular tune I think “medieval rock and roll”. This is probably my favorite tune of all time.
